Authentic Travel in Greece

Why We Created This Retreat

A Different Kind of Travel

Meaningful travel begins with attention—by slowing down, listening deeply, and meeting a place on its own terms. Retreat in Crete was born from that belief, shaped by years of walking the island’s hills, sharing meals in quiet villages, and returning again and again to the rhythms of Crete.

We wanted to share what we’ve discovered—not as tour guides delivering a performance, but as companions extending an invitation: Come and see the Crete we know. Not the polished, postcard version, but the living heart of the island—its people, its traditions, and everyday life in Crete.

Not a Vacation—An Immersive Cultural Experience

This is not a packaged holiday. It is a week of immersive cultural travel in Crete, rooted in place, history, and tradition. Our retreats welcome a small group of thoughtful travelers into a slower travel pace—one shaped by olive groves, kitchen tables, seaside paths, and stories passed between generations.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Cooking with locals in village kitchens.

  • Wine tasting at family-owned vineyards.

  • Walking among ancient ruins that still whisper their stories.

  • Listening to traditional Cretan music from lived memory, not staged performances.

  • Quiet moments in olive groves, seaside paths, and shaded village squares.

Real Crete, Not a Fantasy

We don’t seek to romanticize Crete—its villages, its people, or its past. To idealize a place is, in some way, to diminish it. Instead, we show things as they are: beautiful and harsh, joyful and burdened, traditional yet ever-changing.

The island’s strength lies in its contradictions, and only through genuine connection with Crete can its culture and history be fully honored. Our approach is to engage with respect and curiosity—listening to Crete rather than consuming it.

Born from Years of Returning

This retreat grew from years of walking, wondering, and sitting quietly in the company of this place. We, Vasilis and Holly, have spent much of our lives between cultures. The Living Greece Project is our way of building bridges—not by simplifying, but by embracing the richness that comes when cultures meet with humility and openness.

Our Invitation to You

We hope you come not seeking escape, but engagement.
Not entertainment, but understanding.
And that you leave not with souvenirs, but with a sense of rootedness in Crete—of having touched authentic Greece and carrying a part of it with you, wherever you go.
